Wickford Beach Rhode Island Residence
Scope of Project/Services
This was a 200-year old landmark building slated for demolition, raising public outcry to save the beloved building. Our client stepped up to purchase the structure, which needed to first be moved to a new location, then completely renovated to become his home. While the primary focus was on the interiors, the renovation included porches, entryways, door locations and windows.
Special Requests or Needs of the Client or Job
Besides the reuse renovation to design a residence, the client wanted to take full advantage of the location of his home on the bay with its beautiful views, while protecting the structure from flooding.
Challenges and Solutions
The structure we inherited presented many issues, including the structure of the basement, as well as the proximity of the structure to the bay, making it especially vulnerable to flooding. To protect the home from flooding, we designed the building to sit on a foundation built on a hill, a full story higher than ground level. The basement level was now set into the hill and given its own walkout.
Taking advantage of the original floor plan, we rotated the house 90 degrees and replaced the small Victorian windows with beautiful large custom windows to capture the coastal view.
Special or Remarkable Features
The railings and columns are all new, and the entryway to the home is unique and interesting, as is the basement set into the hill with a walkout facing the bay. Dynamic Architectural Windows and Doors created beautiful custom windows and doors.
What We Enjoyed Most About this Project
” The public outcry concerning planned demolition of [the building] was substantial. Rescuing a home with so much history, while working with a client with the foresight to purchase the home and move it to his empty lot, was a wonderful project to be involved with. The project was a win-win for both the client and the town.” ~Spencer McCombe
