Spencerism #21: Built on the Rock

Spencerisms

Where do we find our identity? Many times our self-worth comes from the feedback and perception of what others think of us. Sometimes that works out. We are kind to our friends, loved ones, associates and we assume they will return the favor so we will feel whole. But putting ‘others’ in charge of our identity will eventually fail when they inevitably let us down.

The next option is self-reliance – when we take control of our own self-worth. Sounds good in theory, but we all know that we make mistakes all the time. This is a lonely path which will ultimately lead us into some dark waters, when we eventually let ourselves down.

I’ve found that the only thing we can confidently put our identity in is something that is larger than ourselves, consistent, and has our best in mind.

Like the perfect parent that always has our back.

The Christian answer to this is a just God who cares for us personally in every circumstance.

Identity in Him has led me to deep confidence and peace that is consistent regardless of the storms life throws at me.

May your 2024 be built on the Rock of Ages.

Gratefully,
Spence (January 2024)

One day back in 2022, Spencer said in a staff meeting, “I want to think of a way to make billing a little nicer for our clients. Nobody likes to open a bill, especially for architectural services.” And thus, Spencerisms were born. That’s an internal name we initially gave these short notes Spencer writes to our clients each month, if they receive a bill. The name stuck, only because we couldn’t think of anything else that fit. We hope you’ll enjoy these bits of encouragement (or simple thoughts) Spencer shares each month.
