Bay View Residence
Scope of Project/Services
A new construction home in a beautiful upscale Portsmouth, RI neighborhood, our clients wanted a modern home that kept with the neighborhood covenants and provided the best views of the ocean.
Special Requests or Needs of the Client or Job
Perhaps the most unique element of the home was a massive screened-in porch requested by the owners. The curved façade of the porch creates a beautiful design element and a space to relax, entertain, and enjoy the views of the water.
Challenges and Solutions
The home design was constrained by odd property lines determined by wetlands and difficult existing contours. The proximity to the wetlands meant coping with V-Zone restrictions. Additionally, the site was both narrow to the ocean view and a long distance from that view. These factors contributed to the need for a unique home shape that leveraged the existing contours, orienting the home to take advantage of the water views.
Special or Remarkable Features
The home is approached through a private courtyard. The front door is situated below a cantilevered roof amid two stories of glass, allowing views right through the home to the ocean. Inside, a floating catwalk crosses through the atrium space. The rear of the home has huge glass walls and an infinity pool. The vantage point of the backyard looks straight down to the bay, with a view of the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge.
What We Enjoyed Most About this Project
“The most enjoyable part of the process was taking an extremely difficult site and truly making the most out of it to accomplish the client’s desires.” ~Spencer McCombe
