Scope of Project/Services

The clients wanted to give their coastal-view 1980’s home a makeover, mostly on the ocean side, so they could enjoy the sweeping views all the way up Narragansett Beach. We redesigned both the living area and master bedroom suite with balcony, added a third floor exercise room and sauna, new stairs to the third floor, gave the home geothermal heating and cooling throughout, and added a swimming pool and patio.

Special Requests or Needs of the Client or Job

The clients especially desired sweeping panoramic views of the ocean from all the rooms on the ocean side of the home, as well as a pool and an exercise room.

Challenges and Solutions  

Working with an existing building to give it stellar views from every room after the fact was tricky, especially with the addition of a pool and patio on the ocean side. We had to design carefully to coordinate the new exterior with the new pool and patio, while working with the challenge of building on the coastal feature.

To give the home unobstructed views of the ocean from the 1st floor overlooking the pool and patio, we incorporated a low-profile infinity edge swimming pool.

An additional challenge:  The home is built over a raised flood-compliant crawl space, with no basement. To add an exercise room, we rebuilt the roofline from the ridge out toward the water to build a third floor, where we added the new exercise room.

Special or Remarkable Features

The resulting indoor/outdoor feel of all the rooms facing the water, with the generous use of natural light pouring in, is really special, along with the way the pool blends in so well with the view of the ocean from the 1st floor. Also, the 180 degree views from the 3rd floor exercise room makes that space especially beautiful.
