Most of us are in the service industry in one way or another. The emphasis is usually on keeping the client happy at all costs. This leads to our happiness being derived from their happiness. So in essence we are giving control of our happiness to the whims of others.
Written out that sounds like a bad plan.
I’m learning that when you decouple the need for validation from others while retaining the care to give them your very best, your intentions will be pure and your self worth derived from your effort — not your validation. This leaves your self worth in your control, not in the hands of others. This is a freeing concept.
Gratefully,
Spence (November 2024)
One day back in 2022, Spencer said in a staff meeting, “I want to think of a way to make billing a little nicer for our clients. Nobody likes to open a bill, especially for architectural services.” And thus, Spencerisms were born. That’s an internal name we initially gave these short notes Spencer writes to our clients each month, if they receive a bill. The name stuck, only because we couldn’t think of anything else that fit. We hope you’ll enjoy these bits of encouragement (or simple thoughts) Spencer shares each month.
